Winter weather is slowly creeping into Pennsylvania, but there’s still time to perform some seasonal car care. While maintenance is a key factor in preparing your car for the winter months, keeping it properly stocked is just as important, so here are a few tips on preparing for winter weather from us here at Lancaster Toyota.
Create a Supply Box
One of the most important steps in preparing your car for the winter months is creating a box filled with emergency supplies. No one wants to be caught on the side of the road waiting for roadside assistance, but lacking warm clothing, flashlights, batteries, and road flares will only make the wait longer and more unbearable. Make sure to add a bag of sand or cat litter to help your car gain traction on slick surfaces as well, to possibly avoid that wait entirely.
Check Your Coolant
Your vehicle’s coolant is responsible for preventing the engine from seizing or freezing in harsh winter weather, so make sure your vehicle has enough coolant and that it’s an appropriate mix before hitting the road this winter.
Check Your Windshield Wiper Fluid
Windshield wiper fluid is an afterthought for most drivers, but it offers a very practical use during the winter months, particularly in areas that use road salt. However, since ordinary wiper fluid may freeze in particularly severe weather, drivers should switch to a wiper fluid specifically designed for winter. Doing so will enable you to keep a clear view of the road at all times.
