Usually a race for street-legal hatchbacks and subsequent variants, the rally-inspired RAV4 (popular for its propensity for chauffeuring families) was not what many expected for the grueling race, which features steep inclines, treacherous jumps, and gravel roads. However, with its top-notch handling and vibrant performance, we’re sure that the RAV4 came to play.
The Rally America RAV4 displaced 500lbs in order to house a roll cage, F Goodrich all-terrain tires, and front and rear TEIN suspensions. The standard-production 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 176-hp and 172lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission was used to power the desert prowler. BAJA 1000 winner Ryan Millen, son of off-road legend Rod Millen, will navigate the RAV4.
“I’ve driven just about everything Toyota has to offer,” said Millen. “And I’ve been very impressed with the RAV4’s tight, compact body and smooth handling. I’m looking forward to putting it through the paces this season.”
